Icktionary is a Masterpiece... |
"Saint Thomas native Ickarus first came to attention as a member of Star Lion Family, the Virgin Island's seven strong vocal tag-team, with a pair of heavy hitting number on Mt Nebo's Chant of the Lions I compilation further raising his international profile. The artist then launched a solo career, although two of his former pride, and a pair of labelmates make guest appearances on his powerful Mind of the Icktionary debut.
And that's the perfect title for this set, capturing not just its introspective, cultural nature, but Ickarus' eloquent, lyrical pen. The chanter, however, ofttimes wields that pen like a weapon to excoriate wickedness, thrust away Babylon's temptations, and as a warning parry to the youthman.
Ickarus, however, strongly rejects actual weapons, taking aim at the gunslingers and glorifiers on the potent "16 Strap", preferring to gird his loins with righteousness instead. "With no gun in your holster soldier, will you keep your composure?" he sardonically queries within. He will, but barely, for occasionally Ickarus is almost consumed with rage, his lyrics incandescent, particularly on the ferocious "When Ur Black", the powerful "I See Danger", the bouncy "Be About It" and the apocalyptic, a cappella, closing "Prophesy".
This rabble-rousing quartet incites listeners to storm the barricades that prop up the political, economic and religious status quo. But before that revolution can occur, first there must be an awakening of consciousness, with Ickarus preparing the ground with the inspired and inspiring "Investment", the infectious but potent warnings of "Mind Who U Lime 'Round", and the religious fired "Show Love".
With strong support from Rafijah, Black Culture, Kimbe Don, and Malika Madremana, and stellar roots reggae backings and production from Bambu Station, Icktionary is a masterpiece, one Ickarus may find hard to better. "Be About It" and "Lime 'Round," "Danger," and the romantically themed "Time for Love" are the instant stand-outs, but every single track within displays its own power."
