Let us begin, at 10.30°N latitude and 61.15°W longitude (Trinidad WI),
where the voice of an angel first touches ears in the form of a baby's cry. At
the tender age of five, this voice was a soprano, and at times, soloist in a local
school choir. Music was a big part of her future but the fullness was yet to be
seen.
Fast forward more than 20 years later to Hartford Ct., where the harsh realities
of 21st century living become apparent. "Warrior princess African Empress
I, trodding this wilderness, jump on a horse and ride." These are some
of the words that would later become the lyrics for some of her most personal
expressions of struggle to find self, spirituality, and serenity. A devoted
"Rastafarian," mother, and writer, she says, "I love my faith,
I love my family and I love my music."
No stranger to the ears, Empress Cherisse has shared the stage with artists
such as Beenie Man and Capleton. She now teams up with musician, songwriter
and producer, Arif Anwar of Vibrance The Arts, to collaborate on her debut album.
Easy going, spiritually rooted and conscious lyrics make up the persona of her
musical character. She is already noted in the underground roots world as the
"Sade" of reggae.
In a genre dominated by men, few women stand out... but out of the wilderness
comes a warrior princess, armed with the heart of a lioness, standing firm and
strong, a Queen, Omega, Menen, Empress, Cherisse.
